S nejsušším naměřeným létem od roku 1961 byl tento rok jednou z největších výzev pro Jamese Bledgese v jeho tříleté praxi v roli manažera hřiště.
V boji s pískovým vegetačním profilem a mořskými větry na hřišti Royal Cinque Ports v Kentu musel Bledges hledat nové metody údržby tak, aby se vypořádal s nízkou hladinou srážek v roce 2018 na 126 let starém hřišti.
Navzdory vysokým teplotám týmovým úsilím a kvalitou travních semen Barenbrug pomohli hřišti překonat toto krizové období a nakonec byli vyhodnoceni jako jedno ze sedmi nejlepších hřišť v Anglii za rok 2018.
Na hřištěm posazeném podél velmi úzkého pásu země na Deal coastline, se Bledge musel naučit pracovat s velmi měkkým a pohyblivým vegetačním profilem hřiště.
"Hřiště neustále odvádí extrémně písčitým profilem vodu a živiny a je velmi těžké udržet úroveň vlhkosti!, říká. "Navíc, fairwaye a greeny mají výrazné zvlnění, takže je problém udržet i jednotnou barvu." Nízké srážky a vysoké teploty vyústily v 5-10% spálení fairwayí, ale Bledge byl ohromen schopností trav Barenbrug regenerovat.

„Všimli jsme si, že když jsme seli osivo Barenbrug v zimě, měli jsme následující jaro fantastické výsledky - jen o trochu později," říká. "Osivo zapravené do půdy v zimě nenaklíčí, ale nastartuje vegetaci, když to potřebujeme."
